REINZ's review of Reserve Bank figures says new mortgage commitments totalled $7.5 billion in September 2026, up 4.8% from August but 7.9% below September 2025. On a seasonally adjusted basis, lending fell 1.3% month on month.
Investor lending showed the sharpest pullback: its share of new lending fell to 17.7%, and the value of new investor lending was down 23% year on year. First-home buyers accounted for 20.3% of new lending. REINZ says the figures align with a cautious market and underline the importance of reading local conditions alongside national data.
